My new book has at last hit the shelves. It’s called The Light of Asia: A History of Western Fascination with the East.
I’ve been working on it, on and off, for more than a decade. I remember phoning home while on a research trip to India, and listening to my baby son making nonsense noises down the line. He turned 15 last week. Scary how time passes.
A little scary, too, seeing reviews of the book come in. Reading one is like unwrapping a parcel from a stranger. It might be a present, or it might explode in your face…
I’m looking forward to making my own case for the book, on radio and at public events over the coming weeks and months - so do have a look HERE in case you’re able to listen in or come along to something.
Meanwhile, judge for yourself! I’m including below the Introduction to the book, in print and audio form, with my grateful thanks to you for subscribing to IlluminAsia.
Enjoy!
I look forward to reading this book, Chris, but I also wanted to extend warm thanks for your recent Aeon article about Watts, who I sort of think of as the "C.S. Lewis of my adult spirituality," his flaws and all intact.
